Tubular Roller Shutter Motors: What They Are, How They Work, and What You Need to Know
Tubular roller shutter motors are today one of the most widely used solutions for motorising residential and commercial roller shutters. Converting a manually operated roller shutter into an electric one provides greater convenience in everyday use, allowing it to be opened and closed using a wall switch, remote control or even modern automation systems.
However, choosing the right tubular motor is not always as simple as it may seem. It is not enough to simply choose a motor with a higher Nm rating or a model with more features.
The correct choice depends on several factors, including the weight and dimensions of the roller shutter, the diameter of the shaft, the material of the shutter curtain, the required torque, the operating speed, and the way the system will be used.
A correctly selected tubular motor can operate reliably for many years. On the other hand, an incorrect choice may lead to problems such as noisy operation, difficulty moving the shutter, frequent interruptions due to overload, or premature wear.
What is a tubular roller shutter motor?
A tubular motor is an electric motor installed inside the roller shutter shaft. It automatically raises and lowers the shutter curtain, meaning the shutter slats, without requiring the manual use of a belt, cord or crank handle.
It is called a “tubular” motor because its body has a cylindrical shape and is designed to fit inside the roller shutter shaft. This protects it from external factors, requires very little space and keeps it completely hidden inside the roller shutter box.
Today, tubular motors are widely used in both residential and commercial roller shutters, providing convenience, reliability and ease of everyday use. Depending on the model, they can be operated using a wall switch, remote control or smartphone application when wireless control and automation features are supported.
How does a tubular motor work?
The operation of a tubular motor is based on a simple yet highly reliable mechanism.
When a command is given through a wall switch, remote control or automation system, the electric motor rotates the shaft located inside the roller shutter box.
As the shaft rotates, it winds or unwinds the roller shutter curtain, allowing it to move up or down.
The movement is transmitted through special adapters that connect the motor to the shaft, ensuring smooth and safe operation.
In simple terms, the process is:
Switch / Remote Control / Wi-Fi → Tubular Motor → Octagonal Shaft → Roller Shutter Curtain → Opening or Closing.
The tubular motor converts electrical energy into rotational movement, which is transferred to the shaft and ultimately to the roller shutter curtain.
As a result, the shutter moves smoothly, without manual effort and with controlled travel.
How does the motor stop automatically at the correct position?
Every tubular motor is equipped with a limit system that determines the upper and lower travel positions of the roller shutter.
When the shutter reaches one of the two preset positions, the motor stops automatically without requiring any action from the user.
Depending on the model, the limits may be mechanical or electronic.
The opening or closing process takes only a few seconds and is completed automatically when the motor reaches the preset upper or lower limit.
What is motor thermal protection?
Tubular motors are also equipped with thermal protection (thermal cut-off). If the motor operates continuously for longer than the period for which it was designed, the thermal protection temporarily interrupts operation in order to prevent overheating and protect the motor.
Once the temperature returns to normal levels, the motor is ready to operate again.
What determines the correct choice of tubular motor?
Choosing the right tubular motor does not depend solely on the dimensions of the roller shutter. The weight of the curtain, the shaft diameter, the required torque (Nm), the operating speed, the frequency of use and the condition of the mechanism all directly affect the proper operation and service life of the motor.
For this reason, before purchasing or replacing a motor, it is important to properly assess the technical characteristics of the roller shutter.
There are many different options available on the market: wired and wireless tubular motors, models with mechanical or electronic limits, different rotation speeds and different automation capabilities. Therefore, there is no single solution suitable for every roller shutter.
Why is choosing the right roller shutter motor important?
Whether it is a new installation or the replacement of an older mechanism, understanding the basic characteristics of a tubular motor is the first step towards an electric roller shutter that operates correctly, quietly and reliably for many years.
Choosing the right motor does not necessarily mean choosing the most powerful motor or the model with the greatest number of features. It means selecting a motor that matches the actual characteristics and requirements of the specific roller shutter.
When a tubular motor has been correctly selected and installed, it provides excellent reliability, requires minimal maintenance and can operate trouble-free for many years.
